James Henry
Henderson was born in 1838. He appears as "James Skipp" in the
1850 census. By 1860, he was living in his father's household in
Sampson County. Sometime in the mid-1860s, James married a woman
named Frances Ann. They had three daughters: Mary Ella (1868),
Elizabeth (1870), and Nancy (1874).
Little is known
about these women, though we know that Mary Ella, who never
married, migrated to New York. After Frances' death, James
married Laura Roberts and settled in southern Wayne County. James
and Laura had five children: James Ira "Ira" (1881 - 1946),
Amelia, Lewis (1884 -1932), Elias Lewis (1886 - 1953), and
Georgetta "Etta" (1888). James also had a daughter named Carrie
Faison.
Ira married
Johnnie McDaniel; they had no children. Lewis and Hattie Hobbs
Henderson's children were: Beathina, Florence, Addie M., Laura,
Elizabeth, Pearl, James I., Etter, Callie May, Carrie Lee, Velma,
and Sarah. Elias' first wife was Ella Moore. Their children
were: David John, Mary Estelle, Annie Bell, May Bell, James
Henry, Olivia, and Ira Junior. Elias' second wife was Sarah
Edmundson; their son is Jazell Westly Henderson. Georgetta, known
as "Etta", married James Roland Elliott. They had five children,
Herman L., Lillie Mae, A.J., Mackie B., and Lenora, and lived in
LaGrange area neighboring Lenoir County.
