Lewis Henderson

Lewis Henderson was born about 1836 in Onslow County.  before 1860, he moved to Sampson County where he married a young woman named Margaret, whose last name may have been Barden.  Between 1860 and 1870, Lewis and his family moved about fifteen miles northeast to Wayne County, near present day Dudley, where Lewis purchased a small farm in 1872 and 133 additional acres in 1881.

Lewis and Margaret's children were:  Lewis T. (born 1856), James Lucian "Lucian" (1857 - 1934), Isabella J. (born 1860), Anne Elizabeth (1862 - 1900), Caswell C. (1865 - 1927), Mary S. "Sudie" (born 1868, Carrie (born 1870), Sarah Daisy (1872 - 1938), and Ludie (1874 - 1893).  Because of their closeness in age, Lewis' daughters were like sisters to their aunts Nancy, Molly, and Ella Henderson.

Lewis T. and Isabella died during childhood.  Almost nothing is known about Sudie and Carrie, who married George Boseman in 1887.  Lucian married Susan McCullen in 1883.  Their only child, Cora Q., died at age 23.  Lucian was the only one of Lewis Henderson's children to remain in the Dudley area all his life.

Anne Elizabeth married Hillary B. Simmons, son of Green Simmons.  She bore at least four children, Nebraska, Minnie, Annie "Dolly", and Daniel, before her death at age 38.  Caswell moved to New York City in the 1890s and remained there until his death, though he frequently visited his sister Sarah Henderson Jacobs, wife of Jesse A. Jacobs, Jr., in Wilson, N.C.  Ludie died while her children Bessie (1791 - 1911) and Jesse "Jack" (1893 - 1969) were babies.  Sarah, whose own daughter died as a teenager, raised Bessie and jack, as well as Bessie's daughters Mamie Lee (1907) and Hattie Mae (1910).

Lewis Henderson was one of the earliest members of the Congregationalist church in Dudley.  He died July 12, 1912.  His wife Margaret died three years later.  They are buried in unmarked graves in the Congregationalist Church cemetery .
