(Commemorating the 40th Anniversary of the March on Washington and Dr. King's I have a Dream Speech)

Pieces of His Dream

In the heart of Washington

In 1963

Martin created a vision.

He wanted his people set free.

Eloquently delivered

Was a message still heard today.

He spoke of opportunity

Injustice, jobs and pay.

He created a vision

For a disenfranchised race.

He crafted a dream

Requiring a nation to change at a faster pace.

It’s 40 years later

Yet pieces of the dream

Lie dead and buried

Like vision blocked

From the light of God’s beam.

Folks begin to march again

To celebrate the occasion

When a nation was lifted up

By the power of Martin’s persuasion.

Back in Washington again?

Is there a purpose for this march?

Opportunity is still bound

Like the stiffness of a shirt’s starch.

I can imagine dead souls

Alive at the march in 1963.

I can also remember those

Lynched for wanting to be free.

Thousands paid a dear price

From Martin, Kennedy to Emmett Till

By the dark forces of resistance

Who continue to harass, intimidate and kill.

 The nation and our people

Still on their bended knee

Have not lifted the bloodstained banner

Of a people still yearning to be free.

There are cracks in the dream

Pieces are falling away

By those intent on destroying

The hope Martin delivered that day.

Can we pick up the pieces?

Can we renew Martin’s dream?

Can we recreate hope?

And sing "My country ‘tis are thee' "

The doors of opportunity

Are being slammed shut tight

Will we turn our back

Or rise up and fight?

Each of us carry

a piece of Martin’s dream

either locked up in our bosom by our inactions

 or freed by our actions.

We may never understand

We may never understand his dream

We may never understand

We may never understand his dream

Until we pick up the pieces

The Pieces of his dream.
